CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

“Sir, I-I got some more news,” Marker started. “News about Nigeria.”

“Nigeria?” Nico looked on from the backseat of the Navigator. “Why Nigeria? What kind of news?”

“Well, sir, when you were still in Maine, I did some more digging. I knew if I investigated what happened in Nigeria, I might be able to find a connection. And I did. While you were out on Lincoln’s steps, my connection called back.”

“Who’s your connection?” Nico cut in.

“A man. Turns out the guy has some insight into Adam Burke and Emily Kilpatrick.”

“You’re kidding! What kind of insight?”

“Don’t know. He wouldn’t tell me all the details. Said he needed to talk to you directly. “To the man in charge” were the exact words he used. The man who could get things done.”

“And how did he know I am that man?”

Marker shrugged. “I guess he just assumed I wasn’t because I was making the inquiry.”

“Well, can you get him back on the phone?”

“Of course, sir.”

“Well then, what are you waiting for?” Nico snapped and tossed his hands up. “Call him back.”

Nico turned toward the window to see the mass of people starting to gather around the SUV. It wasn’t abnormal, especially since that area was crawling with tourists. Nico looked back toward Marker as he heard the first ring over the speakers.

“Take it off speaker and hand me the phone.” Nico knew the noise from the speakers could carry to those outside the SUV.

Marker did as he was instructed. As Nico put the phone to his ear, a man said, “Hello?”

“With whom am I speaking?” Nico said. He heard background noise, people talking.

“You called me.”

“This is United States Senator Nicolas Wainwright. Who is this?”

“My name is Casim.”

“Casim?”

“That’s right.”

“Okay, Casim. Who are you?”

“I am, or was, as of most recently, President Kazah’s head of security.”

“And why did you think to contact me? Aside from my man reaching out to you?”

“Great questions, sir.” Casim got to the point. “You ever hear of a man named Jamison Baxter?”

Nico thought hard. “No. Never heard of him.”

“Well, he was, until recently, a part of the British consulate here in Nigeria.”

“Okay, why should I care about a random man who works inside the British consulate in Nigeria?”

“Because, sir, he has a connection to your brother.”

“My brother? How?”

“Well, did you hear of the missile strike in Cameroon? It was all over national news outlets in Nigeria. I assume the same in the US.”

“I did,” Nico said, but he kept to himself the part about his brother being involved in that strike.

“Well, sir, there was a man named Andre Ngassa in that strike—I’m sure you’re aware of his dealings.”

“I am.” Again, Nico kept the part he knew of the story to himself.

“Well, Ngassa had a mole inside the British government. Any guesses who?”

“Jamison Baxter.”

“You’re a quick study.”

“Again, what’s he got to do with my brother?”

“Well, sir, turns out that he was working closely with Ngassa and your brother on all kinds of nefarious activities, including trafficking guns and kids all throughout Africa.”

Nico sucked in a deep breath.
